Hidden gem, Back Street Gosung!

Nestled between the markets east of Jungangro Station, this hidden gem is very easy to miss if you don’t know to look for it. However, this tiny backstreet yakitori store is well worth hunting down as it is currently a major hotspot to drop by during a night out in Daegu. Backstreet Gosung has the vibe of a Japanese izakaya, a tiny hole in the wall serving alcohol and skewers, and is a great place to drop in for some food, beers, or sake. I went on a Tuesday evening shortly after it opened, and we got the last table in the store. There is only seating for 12 so get there early to avoid disappointment! The store opens at 6 Sun-Fri and 5 Sat and Sun. Read on to find out why this tiny restaurant is unmissable.

The seating is pretty crammed with stools pulled up to tiny tables and pouring out onto the street. Tables are set up with cabbage and soy sauce, which is something I found in Japanese Izakayas in Tokyo so it was fun to find a place like this randomly in Daegu!

To order there are menus set up on each table and you can select what you want. Warning, Papago wasn’t great at translating all the menu items so it might come down to searching for each item on Google and seeing what pictures come up. There was only the chef there and he also did table service, and he was very busy so we didn’t interact much so can’t attest to his English. We managed though with a little help from the internet and selected a bunch of skewers to try. Tick off the items you want on the slip of paper, and you can order drinks too though they are a little on the pricey side, Asahi beer, high end soju, sake, and highballs are all on offer though.

As the kitchen is tiny and there was only one guy working we were waiting a little while for food, but he brought our beers out so we chatted and enjoyed those while we waited. It was fun watching him cook all the skewers though, and the stmosphere was great with groups drinking and having a good time. A great spot for some boozy snacks on a night out it seems!

We weren’t waiting too long for food in the end, and boy was it worth the waiting we did! We got 4 plates of random skewers including chicken leg meat, green onion, bacon asparagus, and I think the last one was pork neck but I’m having a hard time recalling. Anyway, they were all absolutely delicious and though the amount looked small we felt pretty full after! Overall this was a nice spot for some yakitori and drinks, a little on the pricey side but worth it as there aren’t many spots like this in Daegu! Just make sure to get there early to get a seat!
