Daesung Driver’s Restaurant (대성기사님식당) – Seondang-dong/Dalseo-gu

Cheap, delicious, and fast!

Address: 대구 달서구 장기로 37

So to start today’s blog post a little bit of a Korean lesson haha. ‘기사님’ means driver, and is a polite way you can call your taxi driver in Korea. So a ‘기사님식당’ is a ‘driver’s restaurant’. You can find these kinds of restaurants all over Daegu, and Korea! The concept is that they serve cheap and tasty food, but it arrives on your table in a matter of minutes. The idea being that taxi drivers want to eat quickly and get back out on the road making money, so need to be in and out as fast as possible. They’re great spots to grab some cheap and fast food so keep your eyes out for one near you, or try my favourite one featured below!

Daesung Driver’s Restaurant can be found on a strip with other driver’s restaurants a short walk from Seongdangmot, just South of Duryu Park. This is by far my favourite on the strip though and I’ve been coming here for several years now. Let me show you why!

Standard Korean restaurant!

Inside there’s plenty of seating, and you can choose to sit at tables and chairs or they have a raised area around the back walls with floor seating if you prefer. You can also self-serve extra rice and soup from the stand in the middle. They will offer one bowl of rice with your meal but if you’re hungry you can get more here.

Menu!

The menu isn’t huge but offers a nice selection of Korean food and the pricing is easy to understand. If you are confused by any of the menu items a good tip is just to type the name into Google images and see what comes up and whether you think you’d like it. Part of the fun of living in Korea is trying new foods so you can always just pick something at random too! My favourite though is the gochujang bulgogi. We ordered two portions at 7,000 each.

They will bring out a big tray with loads of different side dishes (반찬) on and this is one of the reasons I love it here. Really good and tasty banchan! They also offer perilla leaves or lettuce leaves with the bulgogi. A bowl of soup and rice for each person is also included.

Look at all that bulgogi!

A few short minutes later they brought out a big plate of bulgogi. This type is made with gochujang paste, to me it’s not so spicy but might be for some people (???). But it tastes sooooo nice with the fresh white rice. Plus the wait time is so short, if you’re in a rush it’s a great spot for a quick bite! While you’re in Korea I recommend you try a 기사님식당 at least once for some fast and cheap eats. At 14,000 for two people the price is not bad at all. Have you been to a driver’s restaurant in Korea?
