One of the things I love about Korea is there is sooo much to do! As a big board game fan I love the fact that Daegu has a fair amount of board game cafes where you can walk in and pay a small hourly fee to play any of the games available. It’s a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends, especially on a rainy day!
We checked out this place in downtown just next to Memorial Park and only a block away from Sparkland. The entrance is a bit hard to spot and we did walk past it, but you can see the sign ‘보드게임’ on the building from the street. The cafe was on the third floor so head on up for an afternoon of fun!
The cafe is open 12:00-23:00 Sunday to Friday, and 12:00-24:00 on Saturdays. You can’t bring outside food or drinks, and each person should buy a drink from the cafe (prices are resonable). When you arrive you’ll receive a ticket stating what time you checked in, and they charge 2400 per person per hour to stay. On check out take the ticket to the counter and you’ll pay for the total hours stayed. I think we were there around 3 hours.

The selection here was pretty good! I’m not sure that all the games have English rule books so you can play it safe by picking a game you know well, or it’s really easy to download a pdf copy of the game rules online to read through on your phone. When you want to play a game, call over a member of staff and they will bring the game and set it up on the table for you. We opted to play a nice co-operative game of Pandemic to kick things off. Surprisingly we won two times (!?!) which makes me feel like we were playing it wrong as I never normally beat it, but we felt pretty proud of ourselves regardless. They had the 10th Anniversary Edition with the metal case and nice figures, and all the cards had English which was nice and convenient as we didn’t need to rely on dodgy translation apps.

After two games of Pandemic we decided it was time for something competitive so brought out the classic favourite, Cattan. We only played the basic game but they did have all the expansions available. When we were ready to switch games the staff came over and packed up Pandemic and set out Cattan for us. They provided handy card holders for the resources and baskets for die rolls which was handy to keep us organised. I get a bit competitive with Cattan and was pretty upset when my longest road got cut off *shakes fist* but was happy to concede the win to my friend (for today at least…) Luckily we all had a good time with no hard feelings, and finished off the day with bagels at Truly Baker (check out the post here!)
